Meet the Florist: Flourish by Kay

By Tessa Woolf September 2, 2015

Kaylee Young of Flourish by Kay is a relative newcomer to the local wedding scene, but she's honed her chops working with some of the state's top florists (including Soil & Stem). Her on-point floral designs—one part organic, one part polished—and "messy-pretty" style have made her an in-demand bloomsmith. She's the florist behind the #SLCFashionBridals Giveaway (be sure to enter if you haven't already), and she'll be providing the lucky winner with a custom bouquet for the styled bridal shoot.

Take a peek at Kaylee's work, read our Q & A, and find out her wedding likes (hint: crop tops) and dislikes (ahem, Gerber daisies), below.

Q | Describe your overall style and aesthetic:

A | Organic floral design for the fashion-forward bride. I'm very inspired by color and minimalistic design. I'd say my style is half pretty and refined, and half casual and imperfect. I love pairing things like messy hair with a pretty dress.

Q | Why weddings?

A | My favorite part about weddings is the personal style that goes into creating the couple's perfect day. I love helping to bring their vision to life. When the wedding all comes together, it's the most fulfilling feeling.

Q | How long have you been at it?

A | I opened my business in February of this year, so 7 months. But before that I worked for other wedding vendors and floral designers for almost 3 years.

Q | Wedding trend you love?

A | I love the crop top and long skirt trend that is in bridal fashion right now. I love how the more casual dress can mix with organic, lush florals to create a put-together, beautiful, and refined bride.

Q | Wedding pet peeves?

A | Neon colors and Gerber daisies

Q | Favorite wedding or style blog?

A | The Lane and Geraldine Magazine

Q | Best Instagram feed?

A | Ooh that is so hard! I could never pick just one. I find so much inspiration from artists on Instagram.

Q | Who does your hair?

A | Audi from Seasons Salon & Day Spa in Orem. She's amazing!

Q | What item of clothing or accessory has been in heavy rotation this month?

A | Cropped jeans x Tees on repeat

Q | What item of clothing or accessory are you currently coveting?

A | The cutest light pink jumper and more fall booties. I can never have enough! Also, everything in Taylor Swift's closet.

Q | Favorite local coffee shop or cafe?

A | The Rose Establishment

Q | Best local restaurant you've tried lately?

A | I just tried Cafe Niche! It was delicious.

Q | Current soundtrack?

A | Channel Orange by Frank Ocean

Q | Utahn you'd most like to meet?

A | I've been lucky enough to meet and work with so many of the artists that inspire me in Utah. But, I'd still love to meet and work with Whitt Keisel!

Q | Wedding pro you'd most like to meet?

A | I'd love to meet the designers behind Twigss Floral in San Francisco. I thin their work is amazing.

Q | Where's you next travel destination?

A | Portland, Oregon
