Real Utah Wedding: Dustin & Spencer Reeser-Stout at The Gallivan Center

December 20 marks the one-year anniversary of the day U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby struck down the state's same-sex marriage ban, ruling it unconstitutional. As I wrote in my Editor's Letter in the summer/fall issue of Salt Lake/Park City Bride & Groom, the historic ruling was especially meaningful and monumental for those of us who've long supported same-sex marriage in ultra-conservative Utah.

"It was a surreal feeling when I first saw the news on social media," recalls Spencer Reeser-Stout (pictured above at left), who I quoted in my Editor's Letter and who appears in the magazine along with his husband Dustin (pictured above at right). "My jaw dropped, I sat back in my chair, and I just cried. For the first time, I felt validated and felt an immediate solidarity with all of the LGBT community in Utah. At that moment, something had changed---and it has been felt here since."

If you follow our blog, Dustin and Spencer will be familiar faces. We shared the couple's flash-mob proposal video after it went viral on YouTube, and featured their California engagement photos. After getting hitched at the Grammys last January, where they were serenaded by Madonna, Beyonce, and Katy Perry ("Every gay man's dream," said Spencer of the once-in-a-lifetime experience), the duo returned to Utah to celebrate with friends and family. They exchanged vows and rings last February at the Gallivan Center in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City.
