Lock Star
When McKenzie Mayne wed Levi Roberts in Sandy last September, she wanted her bridal style to be carefree and romantic to reflect the couple’s simple backyard reception. While shopping for dresses, she fell in love with a sparkling pearl and silver necklace-turned-headband at Alta Moda Bridal. The accessory inspired the rest of her ensemble, including feather-inspired hair clips to further adorn her tresses, and a Justin Alexander dress from The Brides’ Shop customized with breezy lace sleeves. Based on a referral from a friend, Mayne enlisted the help of Shelby Nielsen, an artist at Signature Brides (801-214-8722, signaturebrides.net) to style her with soft wavey hair and minimal makeup. “McKenzie wanted a relaxed look, so we kept things really natural,” says Nielsen.
HAIR First, Nielsen applied Kenra Thermal Styling Spray all over. She curled two-inch sections of hair with a straightening iron by turning it slowly on a diagonal and curling pieces away from the face. She brushed out the curls and ran the straightener over a few pieces to tone them down. Then she crowned Mayne with her glittering band and feather clips. “Headpieces like McKenzie’s are a fun, trendy way to add extra style to your hair,” she says.
MAKEUP Nielsen always likes to start with lots of moisturizer—“It’s the key to a smooth face,” she explains. To keep Mayne’s look natural but add a little drama, she used MAC Woodwinked and Mulch bronze-brown eyeshadows followed by false lashes. She finished with airbrush makeup and MAC powder blush in Trace Gold, a shimmery bronze, plus nude lip liner and MAC Lipglass.
Get pampered
Mayne was glad she decided to hire a hair and makeup artist for the big day. “It was amazing for my mom and I to share time together being pampered before the ceremony—it’s a really special memory.”
Photographer Jessica White (801-783-7124, jessicawhitephotography.com) is on a mission: to encourage local brides to think outside the stark-white-gown-and-stiff-updo box. Inspired by images of boho babes rocking chic headscarves, White dreamed up ideas for a bridal concept shoot. “We’ve seen floral crowns trending the past few seasons, but headscarves are a great alternative that still lend bohemian flare,” she explains. White approached Stephanie Brinkerhoff of Hair & Makeup by Steph (801-499-9615, hairand
makeupbysteph.com) about joining forces for the shoot, and she gladly hopped on board. The duo hand-picked a lace head-scarf and a cream chiffon dress from Ruche for their model, Madison Griggs. “The headscarf is the icing on the cake!” says White.
HAIR For an easy updo, Brinkerhoff curled the hair with a one-and-one-half-inch iron, then backcombed for volume. She flipped the head over and tousled the hair to loosen, then pinned the curls up and to the side. To finish, she tied the headscarf across the forehead on top of the hair. “Choose a scarf that doesn’t overwhelm your face or overall look,” she advises. “If you want to make a statement with your scarf, keep everything else simple, and vice versa.”
MAKEUP The ladies chose a creamy, neutral palette to complement the model’s skin tone, dress, and the shoot’s natural setting. Brinkerhoff focused on creating a basic smoky eye: She used a hint of shimmer shadow on the lids, followed by various shades of brown and tan, then brown liner beneath the eye, and false lashes. She airbrushed the face with foundation, applied a slight shimmer blush, and finished with a nude lip color and gloss.

“I highly recommend false lashes,” says Brinkerhoff. “Even just a few individual lashes on the outer corners of the eyes make a big difference in pictures.”
