Behind the Scenes: Summer/Fall Flowers Feature
Today we're sharing a behind the scenes peek at the photo shoot for our Flowers feature, "Language of Love," in our current summer/fall issue. (We snapped our cover image during the spring shoot, too.)
The inspiration for this issue's Flowers feature was deconstructed bouquets--we wanted to break down the elements that make up a bridal bouquet and talk about botanical meanings and history, and the culture of flowers and foliage. As one of our coworkers pointed out in a brainstorming session, "The flowers brides carried were originally meant to each have meaning, not simply be a pretty posy."
Amy Merrick became our flower muse for the shoot. We envisioned our model as the gorgeous librarian type, sitting at a desk, studying up on flowers, herbs, and all things botanical. The Washington School House Hotel was the perfect location to execute our "educational" photo shoot--first built in 1889, it's one of the last surviving original school houses in the U.S. The hotel feature's the school house's original quarried limestone exterior, but the interior has been renovated as a luxe urban-mountain retreat.
To bring our inspiration to life, we teamed up with photographer Leo Patrone, event designers and stylists Lauren and Cathy Brady of Saucy & Kitsch, and florists Sarah Winward of Honey of a Thousand Flowers, Emily Brooks Wayment of Emily Brooks Floral Design, Natalie Bernhisel-Robinson of La Fleur, and Kellie Jackstien of Artisan Bloom. With four gorgeous bouquets, props galore, little white dresses from Betsy Couture and Lily & Iris, and the hair and makeup skills of Gabby Gabbitas, we got to work. We set up shop in the hotel's historic living room, featuring 16-foot ceilings, original antiques (including a 10-foot tall mirror), a fireplace, and a massive antler chandelier lacquered in white and layered with crystals. The posh setting and all-white atmosphere created a cool, serene backdrop for the shoot.
