An urban winery in Utah? Yup, you read that right.

Last night, Kiler Grove--Utah's first urban winery--opened its South Salt Lake doors and and uncorked its bottles, offering local oenophiles a glimpse of their new tasting room and a drink of their Rhone-style wines.

Kiler Grove Winegrowers was established in 2000 near Paso Robles, Calif., by wine lovers and Utah residents Michael and Elva Knight, and David Olson.

So what brought Kiler Groves' wines to Utah? After years of dealing with bureaucracy in California and having a wine permit that didn't allow for a tasting room, the owners decided it was time to try another venue to promote the fruits (er, grapes) of their labor. Surprisingly, Utah's recent moderation of liquor laws and business-friendly evnvironment made it the perfect location to open up shop.

Which is good news for local wine-loving couples. The winery and tasting room are available for private parties, receptions and classes--perfect for an engagement party, bachelor or bachelorette party, or an intimate wedding reception. Guests can view winery operations and sample Kiler Grove's fine wines, including their Trebbiano, Zinergy, Petite Sirah and Interpretation.
