Wax On, Wax Off

How Often Should I Wax Cross-Country Skis?

Tips from Charlie Sturgis, former executive director of Park City’s Mountain Trails Foundation

Avid Nordic skier and former executive director of Park City’s Mountain Trails Foundation Charlie Sturgis lives by the mantra “more is better” when it comes to waxing his cross-country skis, often giving his sticks weekly or even daily love during the winter. But for noncompetitive gliders who just want to have fun with their friends out on the track, Sturgis recommends the following:

  • Wax at the beginning of the season;
  • after every 30 to 50 km skied;
  • when a cloudiness or haziness appears on your ski bases;
  • during a significant weather change; and at the end of the season.
