If sometime before dawn this winter you see a light bobbing along the snow on Park City Mountain Resort’s lower mountain, don’t be alarmed. It’s not someone on her way to Jupiter to track out the powder before the lifts start running for the day. It’s a skinner—a skier using touring gear to climb up the groomed runs—just out for a little early-morning calorie burn. Last winter Vail Resorts reversed PCMR’s historic ban on uphill travel, allowing skinning on Homerun to the Angle Station (not all the way to Jupe) from 6 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. daily, conditions permitting.

Call PCMR’s trails hotline at 435.615.1911 before you go, leave your dog at home, and stay to climber’s left while out there. For the uphill rules at resorts throughout the state, visit the Utah Avalanche Center website
