Some are muddy, some funny, some grueling—and all are downright zany. Try one of the crazy events that race through the pulse of our Park City–area summer. Most involve costumes, some involve bravery ... but all involve revelry.

In The Dirty Dash (June 8 and Sept 18,, runners hurdle hay bales, careen down a 150-foot waterslide, climb walls, and roll in the muck. Be prepared for spectator-launched water balloons.

Think like a gladiator in the Utah Spartan Beast (pictured; June 29, Teams and solo competitors race 10 to 12 miles and battle daunting obstacles like fire jumps, slippery climbing walls, and more. The challenges are kept top-secret before the race, and the penalty for failing to complete an obstacle is doing Burpees (high-powered, grueling jumping jacks). Pint-sized competitors can partake in a mini version: The Spartan Kids Race.

In the Friends of Animals Utah 5k-9 Fun Run and 1k walk (July 20,, dogs (and people) race—or stroll—with the pack while fetching funds for homeless pets.

All ages and stages at the Funky 5k (Sept 2, don costumes—such as a five-member “caterpillar” team—and run the Rail Trail in support of Arts-Kids.

Finally, the 34th Annual Tour des Suds (Sept 15, is tradition. This costume-bedecked, uphill mountain-bike ride—seven miles in length and with 2,700 feet of elevation gain up Guardsman Pass—concludes as all rides should: with locally brewed beer on the Town Lift Plaza. Cheers.
