The hammered limestone frame of the town’s 1889 schoolhouse still stands proud. But inside, this graceful lady was gutted right down to the studs for her impeccable transformation. Welcome to the thoroughly gorgeous, almost-all-new Washington Schoolhouse Hotel (534 Park Ave, 435.649.3800,, reopened in December 2011.

Soaring 18-foot ceilings, original nine-foot windows, and furnishings worthy of a Parisian townhouse now define this Park Avenue gem. Dazzling chandeliers mingle with splashes of modern art. Persian rugs sit atop reclaimed barnwood floors, all with an authentic patina that whispers luxury—but with a wink to unpretentious attitude. The brilliant white living room is the perfect spot for your complimentary breakfast and evening aperitif. Each guestroom is a find, some with spiral staircases and lofts, all with a sumptuous Pratesi linen–layered bed and an ice-white marble bathroom. Out back, under the stars, a serene lap pool and hot tub await. “Back to school” has never sounded so good.
