For a decade, Utah has played host to Gay Ski Week, utahgayskiweek.com, a celebration that’s part on-the-slopes gathering of kindred spirits and part out-on-the-town revelry. This year, the fest returns to Park City, February 26 through March 1.
“For a long time, LGBT events were just focused on bars and nightclubs,” explains Tom Whitman, owner and founder of Elevation, the production company behind the annual event. “Those things are great, but I wanted to create a place where you could express another interest [skiing/snowboarding]—and [show] how much more fun it is to do with your community.” His pairing of snow sports with the LGBT community draws thousands to the mountains annually. This year, he anticipates more than 1,200 participants at the 2020 Park City festivities. Elevation also sponsors an annual Gay Ski Week in Mammoth Mountain, California (now in its 18th year), and recently added Mont-Tremblant, Quebec to its line-up.
One glance at the Elevation website, might have you thinking this event is more for the “G’s” than “L’s, B’s or T’s,” and while Whitman does confess the event tends to garner 80- to 85-percent gay men, the event is open to any and all.
“The local community, not just the LGBT community, also realizes that we throw fun parties. Everyone is welcome at our events. As long as you’re welcoming and supportive, we want you there to have a good time,” says Whitman.
