If you love epic ski films then Matchstick Productions (MSP) is probably a company you're familiar with. They remain one of the leaders in sports filmmaking, with a team that's constantly pushing the limits of capturing compelling action and adventure imagery as they follow some of the world's best athletes to exotic locations. Over the years the progressive camera techniques, editing, and production have earned them a number of accolades, including three Emmy nominations in 2007, 2008, and 2014, as well as eight "Movie of the Year" honors. Their new film RUIN AND ROSE, screens this weekend in Park City as part of a worldwide tour and it's much more than your typical big mountain ski film. 

Rest assured, fans of big air will still get their money's worth in Ruin and Rose, but the film also provides a riveting narrative even someone who has never strapped on a pair of skis will still enjoy. RUIN AND ROSE intricately weaves between two worlds: the lofty snow-capped mountains and the barren desert landscape of the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, Africa. The story follows a group of children surviving in a vast, apocalyptic world called the "Big Empty", described as "a world without water, consumed by sand," by writer/director Ben Sturgulewski who also assures the film is "a bold cinematic experience unlike anything else that ski movie audiences have seen before." In this surreal wasteland, a young boy unearths and ancient relic alluding to the lost wonders of winter and the majestic mountains that once soared above the lands now dominated by sand dunes. As the boy hunts for the ghosts who called the forgotten mountains home, the audience is transported to breathtaking alpine vistas where the world's top skiers perform their boldest moves. The result is a seamless adventure, a cinematic balancing act that juxtaposes incredible skiing with the lands of myth and magic in the Big Empty. 

The team at MSP used state-of-the-art camera technology to capture every scene in magnificent 6K ultra-high-definition (that's 9x more pixels than HD), making the picture quality unmatched. It's the perfect way to transport an audience to dramatic landscapes and showcase the unparalleled performances of world-class skiers. Expect to see MSP veterans Mark Abma, Markus Eder, Sander Hadley, Russ Henshaw, Sean Jordan, Michelle Parker, and Tanner Rainville as well as newcomers Zack Giffin, Lukas Joas, Bene Mayr, Evan McEachran, Ole Pavel, Austin Ross, Fabio Studer, and Noah Wallace sending it big on mountains around the globe from Les Arcs in France to Selkirk-Tangiers Heli Skiing in British Columbia, Communist monuments in Bulgaria, and perfectly manicured jumps at Whistler-Blackcomb. Also lending their talents to the film are three longtime MSP fan favorites, Sammy Carlson, Eric Hjorleifson and Cody Townsend.

Ruin and Rose is being presented Oct. 7-9 at 8 p.m. on Friday/Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday by the Park City Film Series in collaboration with Under Armour, Cole Sport, and Park City Magazine.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online or at the door one hour before the screening.
