Park City Municipal Corporation and Summit County have enacted an indefinite ban on fireworks and open fire pits until the threats of wildfire have subsided. Warm weather, dry vegetation, and high winds have increased the chances of fire spreading significantly and officials want to be cautious. Violations could result in fines and cost recovery for fire-fighting. Almost 90 percent of wildfires are caused by people, meaning it's of utmost importance to adhere to any restrictions and safety protocols (especially with the 4th of July coming up).

Once the measure has been rescinded, make sure to follow these safety tips. 

Fireworks Safety Tips

• Use fireworks outdoors only, in safe non-wooded area.  
• Obey local laws. Don't use them if they're not legal in your area (or during the ban)!
• Avoid buying fireworks packaged in brown paper.
• Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks.
• Always have water handy (a hose or buckets of water). Better yet, a fire extinguisher. 
• Only use fireworks as directed. Read all instructions before use and DO NOT try to alter them or combine them.
• Never re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks (wait 20 minutes and then soak them in a bucket of water).
• Use common sense when using fireworks. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the fireworks. The person lighting the fireworks should wear safety glasses. 
• Never let children light or handle fireworks.
• Alcohol and fireworks are not friends! You need a “designated” person lighting fireworks much the same way you would a driver.
• Only persons over age 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
• Don't ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives; they can kill! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.

Wildfire Prevention Tips 

• Always be cautious when starting a campfire; ensure your fire pit is secure and safe before lighting. 
• Don't leave fires unattended, someone should always watching your fire—it just takes one spark to start a massive fire.
• Likewise, if your are using a gas grill, make sure it's watched and turned off completely after use.
• When cooking with a charcoal grill, completely extinguished before going to bed or leaving camp.
• Completely smother your campfire before leaving. Extinguish it completely using a few gallons of water and even cover it with dirt. 
• Do not throw cigarettes, matches, or other objects from your car window or in the bushes at camp.
• Have a small fire extinguisher on hand. It can be used to safely put out a small fire break out and prevent it from spreading into a major fire event.
