The sky’s the limit when it comes to the many French dip-style sandwiches on the menu at Big Dipper on Main Street.

A great sandwich is a beautiful thing any time of the year, but especially in the summer and fall when we’re hiking, biking, picnicking, and outdoor concert-going. Satiate your sando cravings this season with one of these favorite Park City picks.

GRAB & GO

Perfect for Summertime Outings
The home of French dip–style sandwiches, Big Dipper certainly has some of the most provocatively named sandos in town, with menu items like Seoul-ed Out, A Hunk-a, Hunk-a Bernese Love, She’s Shrimp-ly Irresistible, and the Hot Tejana. But our favorite? Baby, We Were Born to Rhône, made with grilled chicken, Gruyere, bacon, tomato, balsamic vinaigrette, and sauce vert, with caramelized onion soup for dunking. Pair it with a nice glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Gluten-free bread is available, too.  227 Main St, 435-513-7100; bigdipperpc.com

If you’re looking for variety, Clockwork Cafe in Prospector covers most of the bases. There are traditional sandwiches like Reuben, club, and chicken salad, but also curious ones like What the ’Ell is an Ellibee? Answer: Smoked turkey breast with cured ham, a dash of black pepper, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The Italian Stallion is another winner, and don’t overlook the breakfast sandwiches such as the Egg Muffin, Eggel Sandwich, Croissandwich, and Egg Manwich.   1650 Bonanza Dr, 435-649-0576; badassclockworkcafe.com

Transplanted New Yorkers—this writer included—often dream of having a real Big Apple-style deli in our little ski town. Well, thanks to Jason Greenberg and his family, it’s a reality with the opening of newcomer Stacked Sandwich Co. Along with stacked pastrami, Italian, roast beef, and porchetta-style sandwiches, there’s also a banh mi with crispy tofu or roast pork; the Havana, a Park City take on the classic Cubano sandwich; herb-roasted, homemade chicken salad; chicken or eggplant parmigiana; and much more, including house-made chips.   1890 Bonanza Dr, 435-214-7052; stackedpc.com

Belly up to the small counter at The Chop Shop or get a sandwich to go—either way, you’ll be in heaven. The aptly named spicy Firebird—fried chicken with harissa mayo and banana peppers on brioche—is a crowd favorite. We also love The Butler Dip: a French-dip type sandwich made with dry-aged beef, caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese on hearty sourdough served with house-made jus.  1177 Center Dr, 435-604-0244; chopshopparkcity.com

Grilled Cheese at Fletcher's

TAKE A SEAT

Gourmet In-House Sandwiches
At stylishly appointed Fletcher’s on Main Street, Chef Scott Boberek may have created the perfect sandwich with his Short Rib Grilled Cheese. It’s exactly that: tender and juicy boneless short rib grilled with Beehive Cheese Promontory cheddar and topped with roasted garlic aioli, tomato, and arugula. It will forever change the way you think about grilled cheese sandwiches.   562 Main St, 435-649-1111; fletcherspc.com

Located in Prospector, Viet Pham’s Pretty Bird Chicken is the place to enjoy hot chicken at its best in a relaxed, modern ambience. The Fried Chicken Sando is hard to beat: tender and juicy boneless chicken thigh meat with homemade slaw, pickles, and Pretty Bird sauce on a perfect buttered bun.   1775 Prospector Ave, 234-567-8910; prettybirdchicken.com

The open-face Shorty Melt at Adam Ross’ excellent eatery Twisted Fern is one of the best sandwiches in the state—tender, braised beef short rib on hearty Red Bicycle Breadworks rye with Gruyere, apple-bacon sauerkraut, garlic pickles, Thousand Island dressing, and topped with a perfect fried egg.  1300 Snow Creek Dr, 435-731-8238; twistedfern.com

We’re counting lobster rolls as a type of sandwich because, well, we love them. Brasserie 7452 at the St. Regis Deer Valley serves a luscious, Connecticut-style lobster roll (no mayo) with tender lobster morsels stuffed into a traditional hot dog-type bun and slathered with sweet, melted butter. Is it a roll? Is it a sandwich? Who cares? Just grab a seat on the terrace and get one into your mouth for instant happiness.  2300 Deer Valley Dr E, 435-940-5700; srdvdining.com
