Big Dipper is the product of Cortney Johanson, Fabio Ferreira, and chef Matthew Safranek. Ferreira loves French dips, and in a fit of passionate brainstorming Johanson wondered if an entirely French dip–based restaurant was feasible. Located in the historic Star Hotel, what better way to pay homage to the Star than to have a star system as its anchor and call it Big Dipper. Named after Park City’s sister city in the French Alps, at Courchevel, Executive Chef Clement Gelas shares the culinary influences of his home country of France and the Rhône Valley. Francophile or not, you will love dishes such as short rib beef Parmentier, Arctic char bouillabaisse, moules frites, and chicken “poulet rouge.” The cafe-bakery is a perfect place for a light breakfast or lunch, and the mostly French wine selection is outstanding. PIZZA
“Saving the world one slice at a time” is the motto at family-owned Davanza’s, which has been dishing out pizza in Park City since 1979. Originally solely a pizza joint, Davanza’s now also offers burgers, subs, sandwiches, street-style tacos, and salads. If you get fries, ask for the house-made fry sauce. Since 1972, locals and tourists alike have flocked to this Main Street favorite. In 2017 it was purchased “by a small group of local yahoos and spruced up a bit.” Those yahoos include actor and co-owner Ty Burrell. The brainchild of talented chef-owner John Murcko, Firewood features creative “heirloom American food” with a commitment to cooking a full menu over wood fire utilizing several types of wood. A few of the outstanding offerings at this gorgeously appointed eatery include oxtail pappardelle, yellowtail carpaccio, bavette with a trio of beets, A5 Wagyu tenderloin, and smoked-trout toast. IRISH PUB
Flanagan’s offers a welcoming locals’ vibe, even if you’re from out of town. Authentic Irish “fayre” including bangers and mash, corned beef sliders, shepherd’s pie, and Irish beef stew, plus glasses of Guinness and Irish whiskey are the main draws here. But there are also gluten-free and vegetarian dishes, like Tommy’s veggie wrap and vegan chili. CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN
One of Park City’s snazziest dining venues, Fletcher’s is a feast for the eye as well as the palate. Named for the owners’ abused and abandoned but now adopted dog, this restaurant features modern takes on classics from talented Chef Scott Boberek, like the irresistible “Best in State” short rib grilled cheese, chile-marinated grilled octopus, and vegan/gluten-free zucchini squash purse. When chef Briar Handly opened Handle restaurant, he did so with the idea of being “driven by the seasons” and highlighting local, organic ingredients whenever possible. And that’s precisely what you’ll find at this eclectic eatery. The hamachi crudo with Calabrian chile vinaigrette, big eye tuna, and the curated meat and cheese platter are excellent starters. “The No Name,” as locals call it, is a classic, typically crowded ski-town 21-plus saloon with a friendly vibe and rollicking nightlife. The buffalo burgers are infamous, as is the busy bar, but you can usually find some elbow room on the upstairs deck. The signature steak sandwich and pork carnitas tacos are terrific with a cold brew at this truly iconic Park City joint. One of Old Town’s most enduring establishments, Riverhorse has been pleasing customers since opening on New Year’s Eve in 1987. Live music adds to the appeal, along with exquisite cuisine from chef-partner Seth Adams. The macadamia nut–crusted Alaskan halibut is a Park City classic. At this sister establishment to 350 Main, nightly live music has returned to Fabio Ferreira’s Spur, where you’ll find elevated bar fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With menu items like ahi poke tostadas, burgers, za’atar yogurt chicken kebabs, brick-oven pizzas, shrimp ceviche, roasted beet salad, and killer burgers, this isn’t your daddy’s bar food.
