Spice Up Your Winter

The three-curry combo at Good Karma
Curry comes in so many varieties—red, green, yellow—that the term itself doesn’t mean a whole lot. Generally, the word “curry” refers to meat, seafood, or vegetables cooked in a fragrant, spiced sauce. It’s those intricate spice combinations, which vary from country to country or region to region, that define different curries, from the fiery vindaloo of Goa to the subtle, coconut milk–spiked curries of Thailand and Vietnam. Whatever the version, warm, rich curries are clearly a delicious antidote to the cold chill of winter up here in the Wasatch. Here are a few of Park City’s best:
Southeast Asian curries typically feature ingredients such as coconut milk, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and chilis, and they tend to be quite fragrant. Good local examples include Taste of Saigon’s (580 Main St, 435.647.0688) exquisite ga xao sa, lemongrass chicken in a zippy yellow curry sauce; Bangkok Thai on Main’s (605 Main St, 435.649.8424) classic gang deang, a homemade red curry with coconut milk, bamboo shoots, and Thai basil; or Café Trang’s (1811 Sidewinder Dr, 435.655.8884) sweet-and-spicy Thai pineapple curry with prawns and kaffir lime leaf in a fiery red chili curry sauce.
Reef’s Kitchen (710 Main St, 435.658.0323) serves Thai-style mussels steamed in coconut milk and sake with lemongrass and red curry, while over at Squatters Roadhouse (1900 Park Ave, 435.649.9868) you’ll find wholesome vegetarian Thai yellow curry. At the Viking Yurt (Park City Mountain Resort, 435.615.9878) a perennial favorite is the tomato and coconut-curry soup, while Hapa Grill’s (1571 W Redstone Center Dr, 435.575.4272) green papaya salad with green curry sauce is a customer fave.
Red chili–spiked curry shrimp at Szechwan Chinese Kitchen (1612 Ute Blvd, 435.655.8916) is a wonderful winter warmer, and A Wok Away (1890 Bonanza Dr, 435.658.2222) makes delicious Chinese-style chicken curry. For a taste of authentic India, the traditional curries like navrathan korma and chicken tikka masala at Good Karma (1782 Prospector Ave, 435.658.0958) are simply superb.
