While skiing around Deer Valley between now and the New Year, make sure you check out the extravagant gingerbread display at the Stein Eriksen Lodge.

You’ll find the 10-foot tall carousel–complete with reindeer and a sleigh–next to the towering 32-foot Christmas tree. This marks the sixteenth season for the gingerbread-structure tradition at Stein’s; every year they come up with something new, often celebrating scenes from movies, such as Star Wars, Peanuts, Frozen, Despicable Me 2, and Harry Potter, and elaborate replicas, including the Eiffel Tower and Empire State Building.

Putting together these extravagant displays is no easy task. In addition to months of planning, baking, building, and decorating requires a staff of more than ten people, with at least three working on it at a time. The entire process is overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Jeremy Garcia and Chef Zane Holmquist, VP of Food & Beverage Operations/Corporate Chef. But it’s worth it. “One of the greatest perks of my job is being able to surprise and entertain guests with our desserts and displays,” Garcia says. “Creating something of this magnitude with pastries is an exciting challenge. Combined with our Christmas décor, a colorful carousel exudes a magical, wonderland feel, which is what we wanted to deliver to our guests during the holidays.”
