In keeping with this week’s patriotic celebrations, we thought it appropriate to give a shout-out to some of the stylish women who’ve helped shape the country. NPR recently put together a retrospective slideshow of political gowns worn by the First Ladies over the years. Jacqueline Kennedy, Michelle Obama, and Nancy Reagan all wore white gowns for their Inaugural Balls–Michelle and Nancy both chose one-shoulder silhouettes (yep, one-shoulder styles were popular back in the 80s, too)–while Hilary Clinton opted for a lace-y purple frock and Laura Bush chose a long-sleeved, vibrant red number. Betty Ford was a total Betty in her State Dinner jacquard chartreuse gown with a deep v-neck, Mamie Eisenhower was all smiles in her sparkling pink Inaugural gown, and Pat Nixon shined in her canary yellow satin Inaugural gown topped with an embellished jacket.
Enjoy a look back at these First Lady fashions–who knows, their White House style may even inspire your white wedding attire:
