Celebrate summer’s longest days with the Solstice Flute Festival (solsticeflute.org) June 21 and 22 at tucked-away Homestead Resort in Midway. Soak in the healing powers of the Native American flute’s predominant pentatonic minor scale as a soul-filling, spiritual retreat unfolds with free workshops (flute, drumming, storytelling, shamanic sound bath, and more), artisan vendors, and live music from renowned musicians, such as Kalani Das and Rona Yellow Robe.
As the daylight wanes on the other side of the season, join the Navajo Elders at the 30th annual Adopt-a-Native-Elder Rug Show (anelder.org) November 8–10 at Deer Valley Resort’s Snow Park Lodge. Meet the elders, and discover their sacred traditions, namely the art of weaving stunning—and deeply meaningful—rugs (typically 600 one-of-a-kind rugs are displayed at the show). All proceeds from the rugs, jewelry, and basket sales go to the elder-artisans for their return to life on the reservation. In addition to weaving demonstrations, don’t miss the Native storytellers, WWII Navajo code talkers, and the closing all-tribes pow-wow.
