Is the warmer weather making you think it's time to trade your skis in for your bike? We asked Todd Hageman, the technical director of the Tour of Utah for some advice on getting back in the cycling game after a long winter. First thing's first, if you're planning on hitting the pavement (or trail), then get your bike into a local shop for a quick tune-up. Just as you would with your skis or snowboard ahead of the winter season, it's important to make sure the tires, chains, and everything else is ready to roll. (Or if you're the DIY type, find some local advice for getting your wheels pedal ready here.)
From a fitness standpoint Hageman recommends establishing a rhythm with some indoor training. "With spring weather very up and down, taking a cycling class is the best way to rebuild the muscle memory and get them firing again," Hageman says. "If you have the chance, do a program that allows you to use your own bike. It's really hard to replicate your body's normal movements using just a spin bike."
Once you've trained up a bit, go ahead and ease your way into the outdoors. Remember to be extra aware during the spring time. Drivers aren't used to seeing bikes all over the road yet, so make sure you stay visible and use those bike lanes!
