When it’s hot, hot, hot, it’s time to break out the fresh watermelon, passionfruit, lime, and pineapple flavors and cool down with a lively tasting, refreshing libation. Here are four can’t-miss local cocktails for chilling out when the weather’s warm.

Nothing says “summer” quite like the national drink of the sun-drenched South American country of Brazil. It’s called a caipirinha, and you can find it at The Bridge Café & Grill. The sweet-and-sour cocktail is made with cachaça, a distilled Brazilian sugarcane spirit, along with muddled lime and sugar. One of my favorite summer dining and drinking spots is out on the sunny deck at Royal Street Café. Head bartender Bonnie Ulmer is renowned for her award-winning libations, like the Blueberry Mojito and the St. Germain Cocktail. Well, I nominate the wonderful Watermelon Martini for the next award: Tito’s vodka and Cointreau are hit with a splash of fresh lime juice and fresh watermelon. I’ll try any cocktail made with Chartreuse, if only because they are so few and far between. At Handle, Mexico meets France in a killer cocktail made with mezcal, lime and pineapple juices, cinnamon reduction, and most important, Green Chartreuse.
