Summer night concerts aren't the only times to grab a blanket and picnic basket and head to the park. Join the Sundance Summer Film Series for outdoor screenings in July and August, go back in time with Throwback Thursday from Park City Film Series, and celebrate diversity with Damn These Heels LGBTQ film.

2017 Sundance Summer Film Series

Every summer, Sundance Institute hosts the Sundance Summer Film Series so the Utah community can enjoy films from past Sundance Film Festivals. Screenings begin at dusk (approx. 9 p.m.) and will take place Park City's City Park, the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre in Salt Lake City, and a few other Utah locations. 

July 7 - Riding Giants @ City Park

Catch the thrills of big wave chasing with this epic surf documentary. Join the city for a pre-film beach party (starting at 7:30) and enjoy music, games, and tarp surfing. 

July 13 - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid @ DeJoria Center

Step back into the wild west with Paul Newman and Robert Redford who star as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in this classic film of adventure and the outlaw life. 

July 17 - Shaun the Sheep Movie @ Ogden Amphitheatre

Mischievous sheep head off on a whirl-wind adventure to rescue their Farmer from the big city in this animated film.

July 21 - Chasing Coral @ City Park

From the creators of Chasing Ice comes another environmentally minded documentary features. Following filmmakers as they explore the coral bleaching phenomenon devastating reefs around the world. Come at 7:30 p.m. to hear from city council members about the sustainability initiatives in Park City.

July 26 - Sing Street @ Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre

In the '80s a boy from Dublin escapes his family and hard times to start a band and win the heart of a beautiful and mysterious girl. 

Aug. 4 - Walking Out @ City Park

An estranged father and son go out to hunt big game in Montana. They have trouble connecting until a brutal encounter in the wilderness. This film is presented as part of the Kimball Arts Festival After Dark, come for lawn games and activities (7:30 p.m.) before the screening.

Park City Film Series "Throwback Thursday"

Rather than their normal weekend programming, Park City Film Series has a summer line-up of nostalgia planned with their "Throwback Thursday" screenings. Every Thursday evening, you'll have the chance to catch classic films at the Park City Library at 7 p.m. Best of all, admission is 100 percent free! 

July 6 - Beetlejuice

Adam and Barbara are a normal couple...who happen to be dead. When a family moves into their home and try to make money off of the deceased couple, Adam and Barbara enlist the services of a "bio-exorcist" called Beetlejuice to oust the family. 

July 13 - Some Kind of Wonderful

Watts, a high school girl and tomboy, realizes she has a crush on her male friend when he starts going out with a very popular, rich girl. 

July 20 - Caddyshack

Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray star in the comedy about a the shenanigans at an exclusive golf club. 

July 27 - The Newsies

Set in 1899 when media magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise the newspaper distribution price, the story follows several poor newsboys who decide to take a stand. Lead by Jack "Cowboy" Kelly (Christian Bale) the newsboys start a strike and challenge the powers that be. 

Damn These Heels LGBTQ Film Festival

Head down to the valley from July 14-16 and check out Salt Lake City's 14th annual LGBTQ film festival, Damn These Heels. They'll be showcasing more than 20 feature films celebrating the diversity of of the community and sharing LGBTQ history, culture, struggles, and victories through film. Single movie tickets are available for $10 and multi-film passes starting at $60.
