The 1,400-seat Eccles Stage Outdoor Amphitheater at Sundance Mountain Resort.

One hardly needs an excuse to visit Sundance Mountain Resort in summertime, or any time for that matter. Set on the stunning Alpine Loop Scenic Byway between American Fork and Provo Canyons, it’s a 5,000-acre nature lover’s haven. Founded by Robert Redford in 1969, Sundance is as much a cultural hub as it is a peaceful mountain playground, and live theater is one of many art forms visitors come here to experience during the summer.

With shows dating back to 1972, Sundance Summer Theatre is one of the longest-running artistic programs in Utah. The annual production takes place at the Eccles Stage Outdoor Amphitheater, situated about 500 yards up the hill from the base of the resort. Guests walk or take a tractor-pulled ride from the base to the venue, where they are treated to an exquisite view of the stage framed by the dramatic Mount Timpanogos. Located just 40 minutes from Park City, Sundance Summer Theatre is an easy evening escape, or a highlight of an extended stay.

This year, Sundance Summer Theatre presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. According to Programming Manager Mari Turner, this version of the Broadway classic will take on a Western spin, giving a nod to the environs. Turner works with coproducer Lisa Hall Hagen, associate professor at the Utah Valley University Theater Department, to create a short list of plays for consideration each season. Robert Redford reviews the list to make a final selection, and then the production team goes to work. Open auditions and a long-standing partnership with UVU make the Sundance Summer Theatre a true community effort. This hands-on process reflects Sundance’s commitment to balancing art, community, and nature. “We love storytelling,” says Turner. “We also feel strongly about giving artists opportunities at the resort, and giving the community opportunities to see art here.”
