Spring has definitely sprung in Park City. Instead of hunting for powder, many of us are spending the sunny days grabbing some early runs and hanging out, cocktail in hand, at a ski beach for the majority of the day. (See 10 of our favorite things about spring skiing here.) The end of the season festivities, however, are far from over and Park City's biggest spring party is just about to begin. We are, of course, talking about the 16 days of free concerts and activities that encompass Spring Grüv at Park City Mountain Resort. This year's fest kicks-off Saturday, March 25th and everyone is invited to come out and send this epic winter season off with a bang.
To help you navigate the sea of activities, here's our guide to the best of the festivities at the resort and out on the town after hours.
Get Groovy with Free Concerts
Music is the defining elements of Spring Grüv and starting at 3 p.m. every day of the festival, performers will be taking to stages big and small at the Park City base area and Canyons Village. The headlining acts this year are Crystal Fighters and MAGIC GIANT, performing at the PC Base (6-8 p.m.) on Mar. 25 and the Canyons Village Stage (3-5 p.m.) on April 1st, respectively.
The Crystal Fighters, an electronic/funk band hailing from London, kick things off this weekend with progressive dance music mixed with a healthy dose of traditional Basque folk, Spanish punk, and experimental electronica. The following weekend, MAGIC GIANT takes the stage with a blend of folk, drums, and dance rhythms at Canyons. This LA based indie band's already charmed American audiences at festivals ranging from Electric Forest to Lightning in a Bottle and their single 'Set On Fire' has been streamed more than 3 million times. If you like what your hear, you can snag their debut album In The Wind (recorded in their solar-powered mobile studio) when it is released later this spring.
Grab your family and friends and show off your best dance moves! There's no chairs allowed at the concerts so, come early if you want to snag a spot closest to the stage. For the full schedule of all performances check the Park City Mountain Resort website.
Après Eat & Drink Like a Pro
No spring celebration would be complete without grabbing drinks and appetizers at your favorite nearby après joint.
If you are in the Park City base area, we'd recommend spending your après hours at the lively Corner Store drinking $3 tall boy PBRs, chowing down on the freshly smoked BBQ pulled pork, and kicking back to live music Thursday through Sunday. For a less cacophonous experience, try the more upscale scene at Legends Bar & Grill where a newly renovated menu awaits; try delicious appetizers like Garlic-Ginger Glazed Crispy Cauliflower and Blistered Shishito Peppers. Or, you can ski-in/ski-out at the newly remodeled Pig Pen Saloon, located next to the bunny hill, for a casual atmosphere, grilled burgers, and views of the slopes.
Skiing on the Canyons side? Pull up a seat on deck at the Red Tail Grill (located next to the ski beach) and enjoy magnificent slope-side views and innovative gastropub fare, including savory appetizers like Chili Rubbed Wings and Crab Fritters. For a more casual après feel, the Umbrella Bar offers an extensive list of local beers and signature burgers and sandwiches, making it a prime spot to grab a brew with your friends after a day on the slopes.
Activities & Entertainment Kids
Wondering how to keep your brood entertained for the evening? Don't worry, there's a full schedule of kids' après activities for the duration of the Spring Grüv festival. Make a Splash at the 21st Annual Pond Skimming Contest
One of Park City's whackiest traditions is the yearly pond skimming event where skiers and snowboarders don their craziest costumes and attempt to skim a pond. If you haven't registered yet and still want to, better luck next year because this widely popular competition is already sold out.
Even if skimming your way to glory is off the table this year, we still highly recommend you attend this rendezvous because watching people succeed or fail miserably on their way across the pond is, arguably, just as fun. The competition takes place outside the Red Pine Lodge and you must by a ticket to ride the gondola up if you don't already have a lift ticket.
How to avoid the splash (or not)?
There's no need to fret about getting soaked from the splashes. For those that want to get splashed, arrive early to get front row viewing behind the fence. For those that don’t, stand closer to the back or higher up the hill. Generally the area around the pond is so wide, the water dissipates before it can reach anyone in the wider crowd. If you are super worried about it, we suggest you bring an umbrella!
Unless you come to the resort for early morning skiing, chances are the lots at Park City Base Area or even Canyons Village could be full. Not to worry. Overflow parking is available at Park City High School & Treasure Mountain Junior High with a free shuttle to the resort. There's free parking at the China Bridge Parking Lot (460 Swede Alley) and catch one of the frequent buses to the resort at the Main Street Transit Hub. There is also paid parking available at both Park City Base Area (underground) and Canyons Village (Sundial lot).
The parking page on the Park City Mountain website displays a real-time parking availability.
Out on the Town After Dark
Resort sponsored Spring Grüv activities are primarily day time affairs, but just because the sun goes down, doesn't mean the party has to stop. In fact, we'd argue the sun going down is merely the beginning because there's no shortage of things to do in Park City after dark. Main Street is crawling with bars, galleries, and eateries waiting to be explored, making it the epicenter of evening fun. Here's just a sampling of events.
Sing along to Tony award winning favorites "Tomorrow," "It's A Hard Knock Life," and "Easy Street," when the beloved musical Annie shows at the Egyptian Theatre Mar. 23 - April 2. This family friendly production is a great way to spend the evening for anyone with kids. Ticket pricing for shows Friday - Sunday are $29 House, $35 Preferred Front of House, $45 Cabaret; Thursday pricing is slightly reduced $23 House/$29 Preferred Front of House/ $35 Cabaret.
While you're in town, you might also consider taking a cooking class. On April 8th, Mindful Cuisine wants to help you whip up some spring inspired dishes, featuring fruits and veggies. Sign-up for their Early Spring Dinner - Hands on Cooking Class and you'll have a chance to learn how to make things like Saffron and Mint Chicken with Spring Couscous and eat it too!
If you're in the mood for more live music, check out Park City Live's end of the season line-up or O.P. Rockwell where you can get your jazz swing on with the Pat Carnahan Quartette, enjoy free appetizers, and catch a live aerial acrobatic performance all in one night.
