With our first-rate, fare-free citywide bus system and a growing network of bike-friendly and walkable paths and trails, getting behind the wheel in Park City can seem a little behind the times. But while driving less is more in vogue, the prospect of going completely car-free in our mountain oasis remains a little daunting—which is where U Car Share comes in.
Newly introduced to town and helped along by Park City Municipal Corporation, which provides marketing support and dedicated parking spaces, U Car Share has two vehicles available locally for hourly rental. Residents, seasonal workers, second-homeowners, and even area businesses are eligible to sign up online (ucarshare.com) for an account and begin utilizing the Toyota Prius and Ford F-150 for a one-time registration fee, an hourly fee for having use of the car, and a mileage fee based on actual usage. Both vehicles are parked in the China Bridge Parking Garage, and the program has potential to expand if there is demonstrated demand and usage of the current vehicles.
Founded in 2007, U Car Share operates more than three dozen locations nationwide. While competitors like Zipcar do most of their business in large metropolitan markets, U Car Share generally operates in smaller communities, often based on college campuses. In Park City, this new model shows potential to accelerate our ongoing drive toward greener pastures.
“I use the car for work because it costs my company less than reimbursing me for my miles, and it’s more eco-friendly than my personal vehicle,” says Park City resident Rhoda Stauffer. “It’s incredibly easy to use.”
